Lab visit Foundation against cancer
Stichting tegen Kanker - Fondation contre le Cancer recently visited Prof. Tom Vanden Berghe’s lab. They are supporting his promising research on #Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is the most common solid tumor outside the brain in young children. More than half of patients are classified as high-risk. New treatment strategies are urgently needed.
Prof. Vanden Berghe’s team has discovered a new technique to kill neuroblastoma cells by using a cell rusting process called ferroptosis. Cancer cells need a lot of iron for rapid growth. This in turn increases the risk of rusting. His team is now looking for a way to influence the rusting process in neuroblastoma to kill the cancer cells.
